K-ON! OP/ED Singles – Cagayake! GIRLS and Don’t Say ‘LAZY’

Music Post!

K-ON!’s OP and ED singles releases.

OP Single:Cagayake! GIRLS
PCCG-70036_01

At first listen, the TV-sized version of Cagayake! GIRLS sounds catchy and I had liked it over the outro theme cut. However, the full song isn’t as nice as the TV cut. It’s quite a disappointment. I didn’t like how the last half of the song sounded especially with the squeaky name call out bits between 2.38 and 2.44, somewhere from the last half of the song. *Yui’s* squeaky vocals are barely bearable as it is. The song itself is a mix of teeny pop-rock with loads of girly guitars and synth. The best part of the song is the backup vocals that sings the secondary verses. The 2nd track titled ‘Happy!? Sorry!!’ is another fast teeny pop-rock infused number and again, I find the call out bits a wee bit annoying. Furthermore, there’s a terrible loop back bit at the middle where you’ve got the instrumental break which totally spoil what is already a forgettable song to me. Overall, this just an average single.

ED Single: Don’t Say “LAZY”
PCCG-70038-11

K-ON!’s ED song is popular by virtue of the music video styling of the ED animation sequence. It also helps that *Mio’s* singing voice is less squeaky and she is also the more popular character. Like the OP song, Don’t Say “LAZY” is a teeny pop-rock song with girly guitars and crazy synth but it’s a bit more edgier and it does not have any squeaky call out bits. The 2nd track titled ‘Sweet-Bitter-Beauty-Song’ is a mid tempo pop-rock track, less catchy than the titular track but a lot better than ‘Happy!? Sorry!!’. Nonetheless, it is not something I will remember. I have to say that overall *Mio* has the better vocals compared to *Yui* and wins out by a big margin.

  1. I hate it when things aren’t as good as they seem, or in this case, as good as they sound. I haven’t listened to any of them in completion yet, but it’s a slap in the face if the only think worth listening are the ones we’ve heard on the OP and ED.

    • Most of the time clever editing tend to make TV-cut version of of an anime theme sounds better than the actual song. There are lots of good examples out there where the full versions of the OP/EDthemes turns out to be major disappointments. Anyway, I’m not a fan of seiyuu singing groups but having said that, at least *Mio’s* voice isn’t that bad and Don’t say Lazy fares much better than Cagayake! Girls in full. Still, it’s not the best ED song as many people seem to think.
