Impressions:
Studio Deen, this is not the first time you’ve ruined the character designs from a manga adaptation. Most recently, you did it with Vampire Knight. Now you did it with 07-Ghost! Curses, why did you have to turn Teito into a girly looking boy? Everytime I hear him speaketh, I’m reminded of the spoil brat trap boy ‘Wolfram’ from Kyo Kara Maoh. Arrrgggh! At least Mikage did not suffer from such an awful transition but what’s with the multiple winks…did he have an eye infection? Tsk! All it does is make him less endearing. Really, Mikage needs to get his eye checked but I guess it’s a bit difficult now that he’s in a terrible predicament being tortured by Ayanami.

Speaking of Ayanami, they made him look like he’s posing as a male model in nearly all of his scenes…lol. It made me laugh. Then there’s Labrador who really looks like a bishoujo instead of a bishounen. Why is this…I’m getting the feeling that because the story is male dominant, the animators tried to girlified the looks of some of the male characters, you know…make them look more feminine than they are, compared to the manga version.  Let’s not forget Frau’s hair sticking out like that…I don’t like what they did with his hair.  The manga’s illustration is certainly not like that and he happens to be my favourite character too.  I had seen the anime’s character designs when they were featured as a promo on one of the manga Chapters and I found fault with it then.  It’s just that now I’ve watch the actual episodes, I thought I comment on my little displeasure. Oh well, that’s how I feel but I still decide to feature the series because it’s the closest replacement to Vampire Knight. Other than that, I’m a fan of the manga which is still ongoing.

First episode basically covers the part where Teito, Mikage and the rest of the Barsburg Military Academy’s graduating candidates faced their final exam which Teito excels in and was the last boy standing. Teito, who does not remember his past kept having strange dreams and sudden flashbacks of  being a little boy with someone he calls Father and a sea of red. One day, having heard a familiar jingling sound in passing, he saw and overheard Ayanami talking about the Raggs Kingdom and finding the missing Eye of Michael which belongs on the King of Ragg’s necklace that he is holding. This triggers a rush of memories in which Teito saw his ‘Father’ being killed by Ayanami.  As a result, he snapped, goes berserk and tried to kill Ayanami but was immediately subdued by Hyuuga, Ayanami’s henchman.

Teito was locked up for further questioning. But before Ayanami could inflict any torture on the boy, Mikage helps Teito to escape after hearing what has occurred.  Teito pretended to hold Mikage hostage to prevent him from getting into further trouble, telling him they’ll always be best friends no matter what, before jumping into a hawkzile and escaped.  He was spotted by Ayanami who managed to cast a zaiphon at Teito, causing some damage to his hawkzile and hurting him in the process.  Teito is still able to fly away from the academy grounds into the desert where he is soon met with difficulties and falls off the immobile hawkzile.

Episode 2 continues where Teito is seen free falling from the sky and crash into a stranger who was riding through the desert area with two other guys on their hawkziles. He was saved by those three and brought to the sanctuary in the 7th district of the Barsburg Empire. Still bound by Ayanami’s chains, he was treated by the nuns and recuperate from his injury at the sanctuary. There, Teito learned that his saviours are bishops of the 7th district’s church or House of God. He also learned of the evil menace named Verloren and the history of the 7 ghosts protecting the church. He tries to find out more about the Raggs Kingdom from the Sanctuary’s huge archive library. In the meanwhile, Mikage is shown to be held captive by Ayanami after Teito’s escape and is being questioned. He’s being forced to reveal Teito’s whereabouts.

    • Ha, I thought you’d say that. When I first saw Ayanami’s anime version, Ash is what immediately came to mine. He doesn’t inspire that impression in the manga though.
