xxxHolic Shunmuki OAD – Part 1
xxxHolic Shunmuki OP Clip ~ Sofa by Suga Shikao
xxxHolic is back with an OAD release. Actually, this is the first of two parter OAD that CLAMP is releasing this year. It was good seeing some of my favourite xxxHolic characters appearing on screen again. I thought the animation, artwork, backdrop and production quality is stellar. I love the use of colours to tell different moods and emotions. S.E.N.S Project handles the amazing music as they’ve done for the series. The OAD episode has a new OP theme as well. It’s ‘Sofa’ by Suga Shikao, one of my favourite artist. The OP animation sequence is simple but artistic in the xxxHolic kind of way which I really liked. Suga Shikao’s song is just perfect for it. The ED theme is a song called ‘Cherish’ by AZU. I like the ED sequence that accompany the song, not so much the song itself.
Back to the episode, it does feel somewhat like a continuation of xxxHolic-kei. There were references concerning Watanuki’s injuries which he sustained from his fall. He has recovered from it and apparently learns of the sacrifices his friends made in order to save his life. As a result, he has gained awareness of how important these people are to him, how he himself has changed because of these encounters and how those that he met has been affected by being acquainted with him. I love the part where Watanuki works himself up to thank Doumeki for his sacrifice…the boy blushed profusely…haha, so funny. I also thought the scene where Doumeki recalls seeing Watanuki holding the dead cat and wondering he too will end up dying alone to be quite profound because since then, Watanuki has grown from being lonely to someone who now opens up to other people, able to give and share happiness with them. The other part of the episode that I enjoyed was the dream-like sequence where Doumeki and Watanuki found themselves being chased by a group of vicious female youkai. Apparently they are crows who eat flesh. That was quite interesting and it all has to do with a book which Haruka (Doumeki’s late grandfather) left behind.
After watching this episode, I am still curious of the connection between Watanuki and Syaoran. Yuuko mentioned that Syaoran was the third person who paid the price to save Watanuki. Yuuko tends to be cryptic in the things that she said. But it seems that Syaoran ties his existence to Watanuki. Obviously, this connection is important in the xxxHolic-Tsubasa context. Events in the recent chapters on both manga series indicated just as much. It’s times like this I wish for another season. But I supposed the OAD will suffice for now.
