Impressions:
This episode has Natsume encountering a mermaid youkai and an elderly lady, Chizu -san, who is the innkeeper at the house where Natsume and his classmates are staying on their study retreat. He learns of the kind old lady’s guilt that she carries from her childhood days and how she wanted to atone for bestowing what she thought was a terrible fate upon her childhood friend, Keichii-san.  But it was all due to an misunderstanding that originated from her desperation to save her friend who was seriously ill at the time.  She sought the blood of the mermaid who lives in the lake. The mermaid gave little Chizu a vial of what was supposedly her immortal blood.  Unbeknown to little Chizu, the mermaid was playing a nasty trick on her.  It is because the mermaid thought of her as being like the others who are only interested in going after the mermaid’s immortal blood and flesh for their own selfish purposes.

So then, it is up to Natsume to resolve the long simmering misunderstanding and reveal the truth of the situation that happened a long time ago. In the process, our Takashi-kun also gets to return a youkai’s name from the Book of Friends and that name is Sasafune, who happens to be the mermaid of the lake. Chizu-san found out that her friend isn’t immortal and that he has pass on to the next life like any normal human being.  She did get to meet Keichii’s grandson in the end and finally, sees Sasafune to whom she was grateful to befriend during her lonely childhood years. All in all, another wonderful but typical episode that tells of a human befriending a youkai with the theme of loneliness running strongly in the background. Natsume’s commentary at the end says it best:

…everyone wants to know how it feels to be with someone or to want someone to be with you, and what a precious thing it is when that wish comes true.

Oh ya, if you like the ED song ‘Aishiteru’ then you might want to know that the full track is already out. It’s track #3 on Callin’s album ‘Hibi no Uta. Listen to the full song here.
