Episode 4: 雛、孵る A Chick, Hatches
The adorable factor nearly went over the scale in this episode with another ‘kawaii’ character making its appearance. Omg, Tama-chan is such a cute little youkai chick. I thought Nyanko-sensei would get jealous of the little guy getting all the attention but nay, Neko was sweet enough even to give the youkai chick its name. And what a name too…of all things to call it ‘Eggy’…lol. Papa Nyanko was so smitten as to even be caught off guard by the rat youkai who is trying to catch little Tama-chan. We always see Nyanko-sensei being protective of Natsume because he is the keeper of ‘The Book of Friends’. But this time we were shown a different side to Nyanko-sensei where he seems to show a willingness to care for a young defenseless youkai. Natsume’s considerate and kind nature must have rub off on him. It’s kind of cute to see such a development in Nyanko. Once again, we see Natsume’s growing acceptance of his new found home and friends, thinking that his life isn’t as lonely and sad as it was before. Indeed, it’s a lovely thought to end another enjoyable episode.

Natsume and Nyanko decides to take care of an abandon egg and hatch it. One day, the stranger (a youkai) whom Natsume noticed earlier on, approached him and ask for the whereabouts of the egg which he claims for his master because it’s meat can grant eternal youth. He is also the one who wrote the characters on wall, which Natsume figures is some sort of a countdown. Naturally, Natsume did not reveal where the egg is.
Time for the egg to hatch and when it finally hatches, the most adorable little youkai chick appears. Both Natsume and Nyanko-sensei are apparently taken by the cute little guy. Natsume even sew a little outfit for the chick much to Nyanko’s amusement. Nyanko even named the chick, calling it ‘Tama’. Apparently, Tama-chan took a liking to Nyanko’s round neko tail…hehe. Natsume’s sewing and parenting abilities will probably made him a good husband in future. 🙂
Day by day, Tama seems to get bigger. Both Natsume and Nyanko-sensei grew rather fond of Tama but noticed that Tama seems to be getting weaker as he grew. Meanwhile, the youkai who has been staking out Natsume’s home probably figures out that Natsume has the egg and it has hatched. He decides to break into Natsume’s home and take Tama from them. And for the first time, Nyanko-sensei got caught by a youkai trap…lol.
Natsume managed to grab Tama-chan and ran towards the woods. But the rat youkai caught up with them. Just when he’s about to strike Natsume, Tama-chan transformed into his true grown-up form, that of a tatsumi (a dragon-like bird) and had the rat youkai trapped between its beak. Natsume called out to Tama to let the rat youkai go but unfortunately, in its rage, Tama does not recognized Natsume. Nyanko-sensei who had freed himself and got to where Natsume is, transformed into Madara to protect Natsume. Natsume then reach out his hand and touch Tama’s beak, saying that it’s time to go home. His words and touch calms down Tama’s rage and it lets go of the rat youkai. Tama then flew both Nyanko and Natsume home. The two of them bids Tama a fond farewell and the majestic tatsumi then flew off into the moonlight.
