Screencaps with summary:
Episode began with Aidou and Cain guarding the dorm where Yuuki sleeps. Yuuki’s having one of her Rido nightmares again. We see Shiki-Rido and Ichijou (whom I shall call Takuma from now on so as to avoid confusion among the Ichis :-p ) paying Kaname a visit and taunting him. Kaname of course, isn’t happy with that little visit and is irritated to the point of cracking up the ground, sending the fragments flying towards Shiki-Rido. Alarmed, Takuma step in the way and stop him from injuring Shiki. Rido may possessed Shiki but it is still Shiki’s body and I guess that’s why Takuma stepped in to prevent any harm from coming to Shiki’s physical body.
The day class students are envious of Yuuki’s upgraded status of having bodyguards accompanying her to class and the fact that Kaname made her his girlfriend…lol. We see Shiki-Rido and Ichiru in the woods eyeing Yuuki and her entourage on their way to class. Apparently, Rido wasn’t too happy with Ichiru for failing to give his vial of blood to Yuuki. Takuma definitely feels burden with the weight of having to bow down to his gramp’s wishes despite being loyal to Kaname. Meanwhile, Zero once again warn Ichiru to stay away from Yuuki.
Here’s where Shiki-Rido decides to have some naughty devious fun and his victim this time round is Ruka. Ruka is still cooped up in her room sulking. You would have thought she’d given up on her deluded dream of being Kaname’s partner but noooo, she still mopes pathetically…until Shiki paid her a surprised visit. Ruka immediately sense that Shiki isn’t himself and tries to struggle against him when he decides to get too close for her comfort. This ended in Ruka being slam to the wall and before Shiki can have his way with her, an angry Cain burst into the room and threatened him. Takuma arrived soon after before things get out of hand between the two. Cain too felt something’s not quite right with Shiki. It’s interesting that Takuma asked both Ruka and Cain to keep the incident to themselves.
Once again, Yuuki met with Kaname on one of their dates and begs him to reveal her past to her. During one of her flashback episode, Yuuki fainted. Apparently, the strain of trying to recall her memories is worsening her mental health. Kaname carries her back to the Chairman’s resident where the Chairman promises to look after her. I’m sure people are curious about Chairman Cross relationship with Yuuki’s mom as we’ve seen him remembering Juri in his flashback. Meanwhile, Ichiru went to the room where Rido’s coffin is kept and decides to direct his frustrations and impatience with Rido’s return by stomping on his coffin. Although that bit is meant to be a serious moment, it made me laugh. The scene also subtly points out that Ichiru did have thoughts of getting back on brotherly terms with Zero. As the evening snow falls, Takuma and Shiki-Rido are seen waiting in the woods. Rido is ominously still trying to find a way to get to Yuuki but unfortunately for him, Kaname is on the look out as well which somewhat spoils his plan.
Whilst in her bedroom, Yuuki’s blood hallucination worsen and it is driving her crazy which caused a worried Zero to come in and check in on her. Seeing Zero, she freaks out, rush at him and tries to strangle him. Zero lets Yuuki do what she’s doing because he thought that his life lays in her hands. This surprises Yuuki because she says that Zero is her victim and it was her fault for pushing him to take her blood. It was a way for her to forget her past and move on with her life. Zero said she’s acting weird and this sort of snap her back to herself as she suddenly apologized for her behaviour and ushered Zero out of the room. As soon as she’s alone again, Yuuki’s fears returned. But this time Kaname is standing in her room. Seeing him, she tearfully ran towards him. Kaname comforted her. Hearing the noises, Zero returns to her room and saw Kaname carrying Yuuki off after casting a spell on her.
So Kaname decides to awaken Yuuki and did it by drinking her blood and then feeding his blood to Yuuki. The bloody kiss scene was surprisingly well done. The barrier cast by her mom finally broke and as Yuuki awakens, she remembers who she really is and recognizes Kaname as her brother. The rest of the night class is suddenly aware that the Kuran blood has been spilt. Zero too felt something is odd and strange as he sensed the presence of two purebloods and angrily points his gun at Kaname when he saw what happens from the rooftop. Yuuki realizing what Zero is about to do, yells at him to stop, telling him that Kaname is her beloved brother before fainting yet again, in Kaname’s arms. A shocked Zero tries to comprehend what he just heard as he stares hard at the two purebloods. Kaname looks up with a melancholic face and calmly tells Zero that he would have been happier if he was born as her real brother. No doubt, this statement will confuse a lot of people.
Lots of Shiki/Rido maliciousness and devious fun. Rido is really out to cause havoc within the Academy especially among the Night Class students. You can just feel that there’s unbearable tension in the air now that he made his presence known. *Laughs* at Ichiru stomping on Rido’s casket. That’s an added anime original scene which is not in the manga. Seems that the anime is revealing Ichiru’s true motives this early in preparation for the all *spoiler* ‘important twin bonding/sacrifice scene‘ *spoiler* that’s coming up later…and I’m hoping they will do justice to it.
I am glad that Yuuki’s awakening scenes were well animated although they downplayed her struggles a wee bit when Kaname drank her blood. In the manga, she thrash around a bit more in Kaname’s arms before succumbing. Kaname didn’t have any choice but to awaken Yuuki as she’s dangerously close to going insane. In doing so, he’s actually preventing Rido from trying to get to Yuuki first. The awaken Yuuki now realized that Kaname is her brother…well, sort of…and regain memories of her missing past that she sought so arduously. Kaname has been deliberately holding back the truth about Yuuki’s past and was so reluctant to tell her because it wasn’t the right time then. He needed all his pawns to be in place before he could reveal the truth to Yuuki. He’s certainly playing his chess pieces very close to his chest and is anticipating each move that Rido is making.
Poor Zero. The story isn’t being kind to him at all. This point forth, everything is going on a downward spiral for him. There doesn’t seem to be a happy ending for Zero and loosing the human Yuuki is probably the last straw. I’m just wondering when will Hino sensei stop torturing this poor bloke and ends it all. In regards to the love triangle, I think it’s fair to say that at this moment, Zero does seem to be out of the picture. Although, Yuuki was shown to be confused about her feelings towards Zero, now that she has awaken, how is she going to treat Zero especially as he’s hit with the truth about her true form. I still hope for a good end to Zero and I look forward to the twin bonding scenes which I think is going to happen soon as we’re headed towards the exciting climax of the Rido arc. Keeping fingers crossed that the animators will do justice to the coming episodes and not spoil them.
