Episode 5: その執事、邂逅
Blimey! I finally found some spare time to post this week’s episode updates of Kuroshitsuji. It seems I had lots of anime episodes to catch up with but better late than never. Wow, what a grim and bloody episode this turns out to be, aside from the fact that we now know Sebastian loves cats. I knew Sebastian suspected who the Jack the Ripper was in the last episode and he had to be sure that the real murderer(s) did not figure out that he knew. So he did what needs to be done in order to misdirect their attention and Ciel too. But he finally told Ciel in a cryptic way that the murderer was someone that’s not exactly human. The only thing that puzzled them is the reason behind the gruesome acts. Of course, we get to find out the ‘whys’ when the killer narrates the reason for the dastardly deeds. The killer or should I say, the Grim Reaper did not work alone. Guess who the accomplice is. The fight scenes came off a little different from the source that it was based on. Sebastian fared much worse in the beginning as he was clearly outdone by the Reaper but the anime version cut off some scenes and make it less obvious. Things seem to go a little faster too. I also don’t think they are going to show the comical flashbacks that Sebastian had when he got sliced by the death scythe. But other than that, this story arc is kind of tragic. It was a sad ending for an interesting character that was Madam Red. Farewell, Lady in Red.
Presenting this week’s screencaps:
While Madam Red and Ciel is having a game of chess, Jack the Ripper is busy making up his victim for the kill. Madam Red who was losing badly to Ciel, tries to persuade her dear little nephew to walk away from the dark side of the path he’s traveling on in order to seek justice for the death of his parents. But that brat stood his ground. Justice must be served even for the Ripper’s murdered victims.
Ciel and Seb waits for the Ripper in a dimly lit alley. Cat got to Seb. Aw, he adores cute kitty kat but Ciel said no to kats. Scream renders the night air. Ciel rushes towards direction of scream, opens door and sees shadow of dead body. Seb who follows from behind grabs him and covers his eyes. It’s best that you don’t look any further Little Master. You’ll not like what you’ll see.
Introducing the star antagonist, Jack the Ripper aka Grell Sutcliffe, the bumbling butler but really, he’s a death god…you know the Grim Reaper who takes souls when they are about to expire. Except that he’s gone batty after meeting Madam Red and decides that killing is a spot of fun somewhat. Mr. Reaper is full of theatrics too with his grand introduction. One might think he has a crush on Sebastian as he keeps blowing kisses at our much disgusted Black Butler. Anyway, cover is blown and Madam Red has no choice but to reveal herself to a disbelieving nephew…even though he has her name down on the suspect list. He just can’t believe why she got herself into such a horrible mess. Our Madam is not too happy with the fact that her nephew list her as one of the suspect. Tsk! Time to get the show going. Let the fight between the butlers begin.
Grell the Reaper is rather good and with his death scythe, has the upper hand in the fight. In fact, he got our Seb pinned down while Madam Red had a go at Ciel with a sharp knife. Ciel managed to avoid any fatal harm but got a cut in the arm and choked instead. But the shadow of his dead mom clouds Madam’s eyes and stop her from strangling Ciel to the death. And of course, Seb broke away from his pin-down position, badly injured in the process and came flying down on Madam, nearly killing her save for Ciel’s yell to stop it. You know you’re going to bite the dust when you begin to hesitate in what you’re suppose to do and starts recalling the ghosts of the past.
Madam Red in the end couldn’t bring herself to kill Ciel who reminded her so much of her beloved sister. Grell the Reaper isn’t happy that Madam hesitates and did not finish Ciel off. So he decides that she is no longer a fun partner and proceeds to kill her with the death scythe much to Ciel and Seb’s surprise. As madam slowly falls to her death, the scenes from her past begins to replay and unravel.
In the past, Madam Red has never liked how she turns out as compared to her beloved elder sister. She especially hated her red hair. But that changed when she and her sister were introduced to the Earl of Phantomhive who praised her red hair as unique. She fell in love with the Earl but it was her sister that the Earl chose to marry. Madam Red was jealous of that fact even though she loved her sister. She eventually married somebody else and was expecting a child. Tragedy struck when she had an accident whilst on a carriage. She lost her unborn child as well as hubby and was unable to conceive again. One day she was invited by her sister (who had then gave birth to Ciel) to the Phantomhive mansion. Tragedy struck again when she arrived at the mansion only to find it immersed in red flames. That day she lost her beloved sister, the Earl and she thought, her little nephew Ciel too.
Madam Red eventually became a doctor but was disillusion with her job as she is disgusted with women (mostly prostitutes) that came to seek her for abortion especially when they can have something that she no longer could. It was then that she decided to take matters into her own hands by killing the prostitutes who came to her. Her hands bloodied, she attracted the attention of the death god and together, they begun their killing spree. Not long afterward, news of Ciel being found alive and with a butler surprised and delighted her much but underneath that happiness lies bitterness and jealousy of her sister who married the man that she loved.
Saddened by the death that he couldn’t stop, Ciel orders Sebastian to finish Grell off no matter what, to which Sebastian replies that he will beat him. A very excited Grell welcomes the prospect of dueling with Sebastian taunting him whether he could really beat him and Sebastian declares that he will do so regardless of what he thinks.
